Toshiba seems to be stepping beyond it’s competitors, in the process the Co. has announced a 400GB, high-performance 7,200rpm 2.5-inch HDD for laptops. It has an areal density of 477Mbit/s in order to achieve the capacity of 400GB. This has been made possible on just two platters and is being termed a low noise flagship model. The 400GB drive, MK4058GSX, has a reduced acoustic noise during data seek by 2 decibels compared to other high-end models by Toshiba. The new drive also offers low power consumption and a longer battery life. 5 other drives of lesser storage capacities have been introduced by Toshiba, which take full advantage of the 7,200rpm to heighten performance. The MK4058GSX is also deemed to be Toshiba’s first 2.5-inch HDD, which achieves low chlorine and bromine concentrations and low CO2 emissions making it ‘green’. The HDD is expected to hit mass production in September.
